Hidden away in the lush jungle of Bali, is the picture-perfect Kanto Lampo waterfall. Found in the Beng Village in Gianyar, this waterfall is one of the lesser-known waterfalls in the region, but boy it packs a punch!

With water cascading down a stepped rock formation, the view at the Kanto Lampo Waterfall is mesmerizing, and an absolute must-see when visiting the island of Bali.

About Kanto Lampo Waterfall

Kanto Lampo is famous for its stepped formation. The jagged rock formation and waterfall is unusually at the side of the river. But the water doesn’t come from a river! But rather from the village’s Subak irrigation system combined with several small natural springs.

Here you can soak in the water at the bottom of the falls. Or carefully climb the steps and take a ton of pictures with the stunning sight of the waterfall in the background.

The unexpected formation of this waterfall ended up being a blessing in disguise for the locals as the tourists have become a main income source for the villagers. Having only recently been “discovered” in 2015 thanks to social media.

Interestingly, Kanto Lampo Waterfall gets its name from a rare type of fruit that grows abundantly in the local area.

If you want to explore a waterfall that is less crowded and relatively unknown but easy to get to, Kanto Lampo Waterfall is exactly what you are looking for.

Getting to Kanto Lampo

Kanto Lampo waterfall is around a half-hour drive from Ubud and you can get there by either renting a scooter by yourself, hiring a car with a driver or booking a tour with one of the local tour operators.

Renting a scooter from Ubud shouldn’t cost you more than 80,000 IDR. Whereas hiring a car and driver for the whole day will cost around 600,000 IDR.

So, if you are travelling on a budget, hiring a scooter is the best option.

Once you get there and find a parking spot, follow the signs to the stairs. There are quite a few steps on the way down but should only take around 5-10 minutes. Kanto Lampo waterfall is by far one of the easiest waterfalls to reach, with no hiking through the jungle or navigating hundreds of stairs like at Nungnung.

The way down is quite pleasant! With colourful butterflies flying everywhere, the soothing sound of water splashing in the distance, and greenery all around you. It’s a blissful entrance down to an enchanting waterfall.

Purchase a ticket at the front of the entrance, before making your way down the stairs. The entrance fee is 20,000 (IDR) per person. This is very cheap compared to some of the more popular waterfalls in the region.

What to Expect at Kanto Lampo Waterfall

Kanto Lampo waterfall is one the easiest waterfalls to reach which makes it perfect for families and children. However, despite being a lesser-known waterfall in Bali, it can get quite busy in the afternoon.

Therefore, try to get there as early as possible. Giving yourself the best chance to take a ton of photos and properly explore the area, without swarms of people.

The waterfall is open from 7 am – 6 pm and there are a few ticket options. Entrance is 20k IDR as noted previously. Additionally, depending on what photos or videos you might want to take there are extra costs involved.

When I first visited in 2018 there were some locals who offered to take photos for you. There was no “fee” involved but it was customary to provide a tip for them helping you.

It’s really peaceful in the morning and makes for a great spot to escape into the Bali jungle and have a relaxed day.

To get the best view, you will have to get into the water. And if you’re feeling adventurous climb a few of the steps to get under the waterfall. Just do it slowly and safely!

Best Time To Visit

The best time to visit the Kanto Lampo waterfall is during the dry season in Bali, between April to October. This is because water levels become dangerously high during the rainy season. Therefore, the waterfalls become inaccessible to tourists.

If you are a photography enthusiast visit early in the morning to capture the colours of the sunrise. Moreover, you will get the entire place to yourself in the morning. Therefore, giving you the chance to experiment with different spots and angles to get those perfect insta shots.

Plus you’ll have the waterfall to yourself. As the day wears on, more and more tourists will start to show up!

Photography tips

This place gets a lot of natural light so an iPhone camera would do. To prevent it from getting waterlogged make sure you have a waterproof housing for your phone.

If you are looking to get really close to the waterfall you should bring along a GoPro. They’re waterproof and you’ll be able to get right in the water and under the waterfall for some unique photos. Explore different spots and angles, go for a swim away from the waterfall and even climb a few steps.

If you photograph yourself swimming in the pristine water, right in front of the waterfall you will be able to capture the scale of the falls. Which will make for an incredible shot.

Then try climbing a few steps! When you climb on these rocks to get photos, be careful because they can be quite slippery. And the water falling over the rocks is quite powerful and can cause you to slip if you’re not slow and steady.

If you manage to get there early make sure you get yourself some snacks and drinks from the parking area. Take it down to the waterfall and have a romantic little picnic of your own or with your travel buddy. The pristine water cascading over the beautiful rock formation in the background can also make for a great photography opportunity.

There are a ton of pictures of this spot on the internet, but not many people have tried this idea, So, try it out, you might just start a new trend on Instagram.

Safety Advice

Although Kanto Lampo is one of the safest waterfalls in the region, you still need to make sure you have all the bases covered, so you can fully enjoy your visit.

It is important that you take every step very slowly when climbing onto the rocks to take pictures. These rocks are always wet which makes them extremely slippery. The last thing you want is to get injured in an unfamiliar place.

So, bring along water shoes, or better yet go barefoot when climbing the rocks. However, don’t make the mistake of getting into the water barefoot as that can hurt your feet quite badly.

I speak from experience when I say falling on these rocks will leave you bruised and battered! I slipped and landed right on my butt and thigh, creating an instant bruise that only deepened and became black within hours. Ouch!

Apart from that, you should bring a swimsuit with you which is a must as this is the perfect waterfall for swimming. Also, a dry bag is a great idea. Keep all your valuables dry while you have a dip in the water, and swim around for the perfect photo or picnic spot.
